When ri equals 1 there is decreased diastolic velocity corresponding to absent end diastolic flow aedf. Our data have indicated that the demonstration of an absent or reversed flow in end diastole in the umbilical arteries carries with it a very specific indication of serious fetal compromise and the need for immediate delivery although the prognosis of a normal neonatal survival remains guarded. Absent end diastolic flow aedf in an umbilical artery doppler assessment is a useful feature which indicates underlying fetal vascular stress if detected in mid or late pregnancy.
